“In the future, as in the present, as in the past, black people will build many new worlds.

This is true. I will make it so. And you will help me.”

— N.K. Jemisin

Our capacity to bring into present existence that which we hope for in our future, in part, requires dream work. Black Diasporic communities in the most quotidian and most spectacular ways have often dreamed and brought into existence new worlds. As Afrofuturist writer N.K. Jemisin reminds us, this is a part of our inheritance, if we so choose. Many Black scholars in the academy re-write everyday the dominant script of what it means to be a scholar within/beyond the academy. In these gatherings, we will engage Afrofuturism as a way to collectively imagine what we want for ourselves and others.
